Pet Insurance Glossary: Terms to Understand Before You Sign
A plain-language glossary of pet insurance terms: sum insured, per-incident limits, deductibles, co-pay, waiting periods, and pre-existing conditions.
Quick answer
Only a handful of terms really matter before buying: sum insured, per-incident limit, annual limit, co-pay, deductible, waiting period, pre-existing condition, and exclusions. Understanding them lets you read a benefit table yourself rather than relying on marketing summaries.
The biggest obstacle to choosing insurance is rarely product complexity — it is the language. This page explains the key terms plainly so you can return to the policy documents with confidence.
01
Terms about limits
Total sum insured is the maximum stated in the policy across all cover combined. The annual medical limit is the maximum for treatment costs within a policy year, and is usually lower than the total sum insured.
The per-incident limit is the maximum for a single treatment, usually paired with the number of incidents allowed per year — for example 1,000 THB per incident, 10 times a year. That pair sets the real usable ceiling more than the headline figure does.
02
Terms about cost sharing
Co-pay is the proportion of eligible treatment costs the insured bears. A 50% co-pay plan means the pet parent pays 50% and the insurer 50%, subject to the plan's limit.
A deductible is a fixed amount the insured pays before cover responds on each occasion. Both mechanisms lower the premium while raising what you pay at the point of treatment, so calculate the annual total rather than comparing premiums alone.
03
Terms about conditions and limits
A waiting period is the stretch after inception during which certain claims are not payable. A pre-existing condition is one that appeared or was diagnosed before cover began. Exclusions are items the policy states are never covered.
One more term worth knowing is the policy year, the window used to count annual limits, and continuous renewal, which determines whether waiting periods restart after a gap.

Pet insurance FAQ
Policy wording and conditions remain the final reference.
01Is the sum insured an amount I will receive?+
No. It is a maximum under the conditions. Actual payment depends on the cover type, sub-limits, and the terms for each item.
02How do co-pay and deductible differ?+
Co-pay is a percentage share of treatment costs; a deductible is a fixed amount paid before cover responds.
03What if I do not understand a term?+
Ask the insurer or broker through an official channel and keep an answer that cites the policy wording.
